Our first Disney trip as a family was supposed to be magical. And in many ways, it was. But I’d be lying if I didn’t admit it was also frustrating, exhausting, and emotionally messy at times—especially because of something I tried to prevent: the scooter situation.

My husband is a retired Army Special Forces veteran. The kind of man who would carry 100 pounds of gear through heat, mud, and pain without complaint. That warrior mindset doesn’t just disappear after retirement—it sticks. And with it comes a whole lot of pride.
So when I suggested he rent a scooter for our trip to Disney World—because I knew how much walking was involved—he looked at me like I’d suggested he show up in a tutu.
“I’m fine,” he said.
“I can push through,” he said.
“I don’t need a damn scooter.”
Except he did.
😤 Pain in the Parks—And Not Just His
By the second day, the cracks were showing. He was in pain. I could see it in the way he walked, the way he tensed up, the shortness in his voice. And the pain made him grumpy. Really grumpy. Like full-on Grumpy from Snow White without the beard but with all the attitude kind of grumpy.
He snapped and huffed. He stood off to the side while our son and I tried to enjoy the rides. And that second night… I cried in the bathtub. Not because I was mad, but because I was heartbroken. I wanted this trip to be full of magic and memories—and instead I felt like I was dragging a miserable man through the Most Magical Place on Earth.
That’s when I snapped, too.
⚠️ The Ultimatum
On the morning of Day 3, I gave him a choice:
“You either rent a scooter, or I’m leaving you in the room while our son and I go enjoy the park.”
I meant it. I was done tiptoeing around his pain and pride and needed to salvage the trip—for all of us.
And I walked out the door. I sat down and enjoyed breakfast with my son and then we headed to catch the bus. That’s when my husband caught up to us. And we all headed to Hollywood Studios.
Once we got to the park he grumbled, but he rented the scooter.
And just like that… everything changed.

✨🛵 Magic on Wheels
With the scooter, the pain faded into the background. His mood lifted. He laughed again. He rode beside our son and actually enjoyed himself. That one decision—just renting the damn scooter—gave us the family trip we’d been dreaming of.
After that, he never looked back.
He now has his own personal scooter. It’s fully decked out with military branch stickers, a digital faceplate on the front, and—yes—a couple of pairs of Mickey ears. Oh, and it has a name now: Bad Duck. 😅
He rides that thing with pride. It’s not just a mobility device anymore—it’s a whole character, a companion, a statement.
Bad Duck is loud, proud, and unapologetically ours.
It’s become a symbol of embracing the life we have, not the one we wish we still lived in.

🧠💔 The Real Battle? Letting Go of the Old Rules
For many veterans, disability is complicated. There’s pride in enduring. There’s shame in asking for help. But Disney doesn’t care how tough you used to be. Disney will chew up your back, knees, and feet and spit them out before noon.
This wasn’t about weakness. It was about wisdom. And in the end, it was about LOVE.
Because choosing to ride that scooter meant choosing to be present with his family. It meant putting connection ahead of pride. And that is nothing short of heroic.

💬 To the Stubborn Warrior in Your Life
If you’re reading this and thinking about someone you love who “doesn’t need a scooter”—this post is for you.
If you’re that person yourself, I say this with all the love in the world:
Rent. The. Scooter.
You don’t have anything to prove.
But you’ve got a whole lot to enjoy.

✨ TL;DR:
- My retired Special Forces husband refused a scooter at Disney.
- He was in pain and super grumpy. I cried in the tub.
- I gave him an ultimatum: scooter or stay in the room.
- He chose the scooter—and the whole trip got better.
- Now he has his own, covered in military pride and Mickey ears.
- Moral of the story: Rent the damn scooter. Don’t let pride ruin your family’s fun.
