How We Afford Disney Trips

If You’re Charging Disney Prices, I Need a Character and a Hug
A lot of people assume we must have a lot of money because we go to Disney a lot.
Which makes me laugh.
Because the truth is, we don’t really do much when we’re home. At all. We are aggressively uninteresting.
We don’t go out to eat much.
There are no spontaneous weekends.
We’re not out here brunching and bar hopping and trying the new hot spot every Friday night. We’re home. In sweatpants. Debating whether it’s worth putting on real pants to go pick up groceries.
And honestly? Part of that is because a lot of the restaurants back home are charging Disney-level prices now.
And listen. If you’re going to ask me to pay Disney prices, I’m going to need a character and a hug. Possibly a parade. Definitely a smile and a “have a magical day.”
The Myth: You “Must Be Rich” to Afford Disney Trips
People see the trips and think:
“Wow, must be nice.”What most people don’t see is how we afford Disney trips by trading everyday spending for something we actually value.:
- The skipped dinners out
- The boring weekends
- The very exciting activity of staying home and not spending money
We don’t “add” Disney on top of a full lifestyle.
We replace things.Dinner out becomes groceries.
Weekend plans become movie night at home.
Impulse spending becomes, “That’s worth one Via Napoli.”Because that’s how we measure things.
Via Napoli is one of our favorite places to eat in EPCOT. It’s a table service restaurant, it’s not outrageously expensive, and for three people, with adult beverages, you can usually eat there for around $100 to a little over, depending on what you order.
So when I look at prices for things at home, I think:
- That’s worth one Via Napoli.
- That’s worth two and a half Via Napolis.
- Nope, that is absolutely not worth a Via Napoli.
It’s a very effective system.
Disney Isn’t Cheap. But At Least It Knows What It Is.
Here’s the difference.
When I spend money at Disney, I know exactly what I’m paying for:
- Atmosphere
- Entertainment
- Planning
- Intentional memories
- A mouse that understands customer service
When I spend the same amount at home, I get:
- A loud TV
- A rushed server
- A meal I could’ve made better myself
- And a bill that makes me stare at the receipt like it personally offended me
If I’m paying premium prices, I want premium vibes.
Otherwise, I’ll stay home and put that money toward something that actually feels worth it.
The Boring Stuff That Makes Disney Happen
No, we don’t have a secret trust fund.
We’re not doing anything extreme.
No, we’re not eating ramen in the dark.We just do a lot of small, unsexy things that add up.
Stuff like:
- Scanning receipts and using rewards for movies and little treats instead of paying cash
- Using credit card rewards intentionally, not recklessly
- Taking advantage of Disney discounts and perks
- Setting the thermostat a degree or two higher or lower
- Watching everyday expenses so there’s less waste
- And a number of other boring money-saving methods
None of this pays for Disney by itself.
But together? It makes room.
This is not glamorous.
It’s not aspirational.
This is budgeting in sweatpants.
What People Actually Mean When They Say “You Must Be Rich”
What they usually mean is:
“You’re spending your money differently than I would.”And that’s fine.
We are not rich.
We’re not doing anything extraordinary.
We’re just intentional.People see the trips.
They don’t see the hundreds of tiny, boring, responsible choices that made them possible. And honestly? That’s okay.
Just know—if you see us at Disney again, it probably means we skipped a lot of local dinners out, stayed home more than you think, and decided that this was where we wanted our money to go.
And yes.
If I’m paying Disney prices, I’m going to want a character and a hug.

Leave It Better Than You Found It: Disney Edition

There’s a rule my husband carried home from his military life: leave it better than you found it. It’s also a common campground rule, but in the military it becomes second nature. You clean up after yourself, you respect the space, and you make things easier for the next person.
Since becoming part of military family life, I’ve seen how powerful that mindset is. And honestly, I wish more of it showed up at Disney.
At Shades of Green, I don’t notice the problem much. But at Disney resorts and in the parks, it’s hard to ignore:
- Towels and trash abandoned by the pool.
- Tables left covered in food and wrappers.
- After fireworks, Main Street glittering with empty cups, spilled popcorn, and tossed wrappers—like confetti that isn’t magical at all.
- And if you’ve ever been to Fantasmic? It’s even worse.
I get it—vacation is a time to relax and be carefree. But somewhere along the way, carefree started to look a lot like careless.

Why It Matters
Disney feels magical because Cast Members work tirelessly behind the scenes to keep it that way. And one group in particular deserves a standing ovation: the custodial staff.
You can’t walk through a park without seeing them—sweeping, tidying, clearing tables, keeping things fresh and spotless. They do a fabulous job, and they deserve every bit of gratitude we can give them.
But here’s the truth: every napkin, cup, or towel left behind takes them away from other tasks that could make the parks shine even brighter. And when adults don’t clean up after themselves, Disney has to schedule and pay for even more staff to cover the basics. That cost doesn’t just vanish—it factors into the prices people love to complain about.
So in a way, respecting the space doesn’t just help Cast Members—it helps all of us.

Beyond the Trash
“Leave it better than you found it” isn’t just about picking up. It’s about respect.
- For the Cast Members who keep the parks magical.
- For the fellow guests who come after you.
- For your kids, who are learning what it means to be responsible even while having fun.
- And for the kids who aren’t yours—because every action models what’s acceptable.
And let’s be real: Cast Members aren’t your mother, and they aren’t your personal maids. Leaving your trash for them isn’t just lazy—it’s disrespectful.
The truth is, kids watch what adults do far more than what adults say. If they see grown-ups leaving trash behind, they’ll think that’s normal. If they see us picking up after ourselves, saying thank you, and treating Cast Members kindly, they’ll carry that forward.
Why This Hits Home for Us
Living in a military family has taught me that “leave it better than you found it” is more than a slogan—it’s a way of moving through the world. Whether it’s a campsite, a workspace, or a borrowed room, the idea is simple: you show respect for the space and the people who come after you.
And Disney is no different. These parks and resorts belong to all of us who walk through the gates. When we take care of them, we’re not just preserving the magic for ourselves—we’re making sure it’s there for the next family, the next kid seeing Main Street for the first time, and the next Cast Member who takes pride in their work.

A Simple Challenge
So here’s my ask: the next time you’re tempted to walk away from that table or leave your towel behind—pause. Ask yourself: what would Walt do?
There are countless stories of Walt Disney bending down to pick up trash in his own parks. He believed no one was too important to take care of the space they loved. If Walt could do it, so can we.
So be magical. Preserve the magic. Leave Disney better than you found it—because that’s how it lasts. And while you’re at it, leave people better than you found them, too.

Cast Member Thank You Cards at Disney World

✨ Making Magic for the Magic Makers: Cast Member Thank You Cards at Disney World
One of my favorite Disney traditions didn’t start with a ride or a parade — it started with a simple thank-you.
I first began handing out small, generic Cast Member thank-you cards. I wasn’t sure what would happen, but their reactions spoke volumes. Some told me it made their day. Others said it made a rough day better. Those little moments showed me just how powerful gratitude can be.
Over time, I started making the cards more personal. Instead of generic designs, I created ones for each park, and eventually, for specific attractions. It was like saying, “I see you.” And what surprised me most was how much those details mattered — not just to them, but to me too.
💌 From Generic to Personal Cast Member Thank You Cards
At first, my thank-you cards were simple: just a cheerful message of appreciation. But I realized each Cast Member plays such a unique role in the Disney experience. So why not reflect that?
That’s when I began designing attraction-specific cards, themed to match the rides, shows, and characters. From custodial to characters, each card became more than paper — it became recognition of the role they play in keeping the magic alive.

🌟 Cast Members: The True Heart of Disney
Every ride we board, every parade we watch, every character hug we treasure — they all begin with a Cast Member.
It’s the custodial Cast Member who keeps spaces spotless. The attractions host who smiles through long hours. The character performer who kneels down to a child’s eye level. Disney magic isn’t automatic. It’s created by people. And those people deserve to know how much they matter.

🎭 The Frozone Moment
Most recently, I handed one of my cards to Frozone. His reaction stopped me in my tracks: he placed his hand on his chest several times, gave me a hug, and then shook my husband’s hand.
That one exchange reminded me why I started this tradition in the first place. A tiny thank-you card can become something bigger — a spark of recognition that says your work matters.
✨ The Joy of Gratitude
For me, it’s the look on a Cast Member’s face that makes this ritual so special. That moment when their eyes brighten, when their smile softens, when you can see that the message landed.
We all want to know that what we do matters. And it does — so much. Especially at Disney, where Cast Members are the heartbeat of the magic.
🏰 How You Can Share Gratitude Too
If you’d like to bring a little magic back to Cast Members on your next trip, here are a few simple ways:
- Say thank you. Sincere words go a long way.
- Compliment something specific. Notice their kindness, humor, or efficiency.
- Hand out thank-you cards. Whether simple or themed, it’s the thought that counts.
- Leave positive feedback. Visit Guest Services or use the app to recognize them by name.
No matter the method, it’s about letting Cast Members know: we see you, and we appreciate you.

💜 Closing Thoughts
Disney’s tagline has always been about magic — but the truth is, the real magic lives in its people.
When I hand a Cast Member a card, I’m not just giving them paper. I’m giving recognition, gratitude, and hopefully a spark of joy that carries them through the day.
Because sometimes, the best kind of magic isn’t found in fireworks or rides. It’s in reminding someone that what they do truly matters.

Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party 2025: Countdown & Our Game Plan
🎃 MNSSHP 2025: What We’re Planning, Hoping, and Probably Forgetting

🧁 Intro
Our Halloween dream team is back at it—Josh, Aiden, and me. We’re the usual suspects, and Halloween is kind of our thing. I’ve loved it since I was a kid—the spooky vibes, the costumes, the candy, all of it. Now we get to bring that same magic to Aiden. And yes, we absolutely dress up. With just 2 days to go until Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party 2025, we’re in full planning mode—hoping to try a few things we missed last time, get better photos, and finally claim a prime spot for the parade. We’re going in with a plan, a backup plan, and enough snacks to survive the night. Let’s do this.
Skip Ahead: Short on time? Jump to the ✨ TL;DR Summary of Our 2025 Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party Game Plan »
📚 What We Learned Last Year at Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party 2025
🎭 Parade Strategy Tips
If you want a good view of the Boo-to-You Parade during Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party 2025, you have to get there early. Everything I read before our trip talked about how the Halloween parties had “lower crowds”—I’m here to tell you, that’s a lie. The party was packed.
(See our full recap from last year’s Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party 2024 here »)Last year was our first MNSSHP, and we weren’t prepared for just how crowded it would be. I had this whole plan in place, but Tiana’s Bayou Adventure had just opened, and I wanted to hit that first. Unfortunately, it was down—and that threw my whole strategy into chaos.
We ended up across from Liberty Tree Tavern when the parade started. It was shoulder-to-shoulder. We could barely see anything, and the lighting from that angle made my photos practically unusable. This time, we’re planning ahead. We’re going to pick our parade spot early, camp out if we have to, and make it count.
🎃 Costume Regrets (and Wins)
We actually nailed our costumes last year—they were fun, comfortable enough, and made the night even more magical. This year, we’re planning to step it up just a bit, but we’re still keeping one very important truth in mind: it’s going to be HOT, MUGGY, and sticky—with a decent chance of rain. So, no long sleeves, no long pants, and definitely no heavy layers. I even built an umbrella into my costume this time, just in case Florida decides to Florida. Practical can still be festive.
💥 Overstimulation Moments to Prep For
This was probably my biggest personal fail last year. After a downpour (which thankfully only lasted about 30 minutes), many of the characters retreated—so we missed a few I had really hoped to catch. I pivoted and figured we’d watch Disney’s Not-So-Spooky Spectacular instead. We found our usual spot right in front of the castle, threw on our ponchos, and waited.Big mistake.
Ponchos in September? Hot.
Sitting on them after a rainstorm? Damp.
Add in the post-storm humidity? Miserable. And then came the crowds. They flooded in from every direction until we were completely surrounded—shoulder to shoulder, wall to wall. Between the heat, the sweat, the claustrophobia, and the noise, we were all overstimulated. I thought we’d make our escape right after the show… but when you’ve got a scooter in your party, you’re not weaving through crowds like that. We were stuck.
I was on the edge of my own meltdown—much less poor Aiden.
But then, right after the fireworks, Hocus Pocus Villain Spelltacular began—and honestly, I’m glad we stayed. We ended the night on a high note, even though it was a rough stretch getting there.
This year? We’re prepping better for Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party 2025. We know what to expect. We’ve got our sensory strategies, escape routes, and backup plans ready to go.
📅 Our 2025 Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party Plan
🕒 Arrival Time
Last year we arrived around noon—and ended up tapping out early. This time, we’re planning a later start. The goal is to roll in around 3 or 4 PM, depending on how the day unfolds, and stay until the end. Some of the specialty snacks become available a little before the official 7 PM party start, so we’re hoping to get lucky and knock out a couple early. We’ll likely grab our wristbands over in Adventureland this year, but if that doesn’t work out, Mickey’s Philharmagic is our backup.
I’ve learned not to overplan. There’s a difference between being prepared and being rigid—and we’re sticking to flexible this time.
🎆 Must-Do Entertainment
This year, the Boo-to-You Parade is at the top of our list for Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party 2025. We’ve seen the shows—and we might catch them again if timing works out—but this time, the main mission is to find a great spot and finally get some decent photos of the parade.Beyond that, I’m shifting my focus toward characters and the other experiences we missed last year. If we catch some bonus entertainment along the way? Great. But the parade is the priority.

🍬 Top Treat Stops
We plan to hit as many Trick-or-Treat stations as we can squeeze in—literally. We probably won’t have time (or tummy space) for everything, but we’re definitely hunting down a few party-exclusive snacks that caught our eye:- 🐷 Chipotle Barbecue Pork and Street Corn French Fries – Casey’s Corner
- 🧛♂️ Cajun Crawfish and Sausage BOOtine – Golden Oak Outpost
- 👻 Beignets from Beyond – Golden Oak Outpost
- 🌶️ Creepy Kimchi Corn Dog – Sleepy Hollow
- 🕯️ Madame Leota Séance Candle – Sleepy Hollow
- 🧪 Magic Potion Slushy – Liberty Square Market
- 🧄 Undead Garlic-Parmesan Chicken Strips – Pinocchio Village Haus
- 🧁 Captain Hook Treasure Whoopie Pie – Pinocchio Village Haus
- 👻 Scary Ghost Slushy – Pinocchio Village Haus
- 🌭 Jalapeño Popper Dog – The Lunching Pad
- 💀 Skull Cake – The Lunching Pad
- 🌀 Ghoulish Blue Raspberry Slushy – The Lunching Pad
So yeah… we may not survive the night sugar-sober or spice-free, but we’ll go down happy. And sticky. Definitely sticky.

🎢 Must-Ride Attractions
There are two absolute musts for us this year: Pirates of the Caribbean and Haunted Mansion.Pirates is one of my personal favorites any time of year—and it ties in perfectly with our costume theme this year (more on that later 😉). And Haunted Mansion? That’s my ultimate favorite during the Halloween party. The whole area gets decked out in spooky charm, and the vibe is unbeatable. It’s basically the heart of Halloween at Magic Kingdom.
If time allows—and that’s a big if—we might also hit up:
- 🎤 Monsters, Inc. Laugh Floor
- 🍵 Mad Tea Party
- 🚀 Space Mountain
…but honestly, those are bonus rounds. We’re keeping our focus on the classics this time.
📸 Character Meet & Greet Goals
Let’s be honest—I want to meet all the characters. Every last one of them. But since time (and lines) are a thing, we’re focusing on our top priorities this year:- 🎃 Jack and Sally – a Halloween must
- 🐭 Mickey and Minnie in their Halloween best
- 🕺 Elvis Stitch – absolutely cannot miss!
If time allows, we’d love to also catch:
- 👑 The Evil Queen
- 🔥 Maleficent
- 👻 The Hitchhiking Ghosts
- ☕ Alice, Mad Hatter, and Queen of Hearts
We’re going in with a flexible mindset and a solid plan—and if we only meet a few, we’ll still call it a win.
🧊 Where We Plan to Cool Down or Take Breaks
When it’s hot—or pouring—rides with indoor queues are lifesavers. Not only do they give us a chance to rest in the A/C, but they’re also a great excuse to sneak in a little extra fun. Character meet-and-greets with indoor lines serve the same purpose: beat the heat, catch your breath, and still feel like you’re doing something magical. Our usual haunts include:
- 🎶 Mickey’s Philharmagic
- 😂 Monsters, Inc. Laugh Floor
And of course, if the weather cooperates, we’ll also take snack breaks whenever and wherever we can. Nothing like sitting down with a ghoulish treat to regroup and recharge.

🧠 Sensory Prep for Aiden (and All of Us)
Let’s be real—sensory prep isn’t just for Aiden. It’s for all of us during Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party 2025.For Aiden, regulation usually looks like movement or snacks—either we keep him moving with short lines and familiar pacing, or we pause for something tasty and let him decompress. But the truth is, managing his sensory needs means I’m constantly monitoring everything—his body language, the crowds, the noise, the transitions. And that can be overstimulating for me.
Josh, with his combat-related PTSD, needs space and the ability to move freely. Getting trapped in tight crowds isn’t just uncomfortable—it’s a serious stressor. So we make a point to stick to the periphery when possible and use rest stops that are a little more under-the-radar.
All of that means: no rigid planning. Our “plan” has to be flexible, relaxed, and built around pacing ourselves—because keeping things magical requires all of us to feel safe and supported.
🧡 What We’re Most Excited About
Honestly? All of it. Dressing up. Seeing the park all decked out in spooky splendor. Meeting characters. Eating snacks. Experiencing Haunted Mansion in its Halloween glory.
Dressing up. Seeing the park all decked out in spooky splendor. Hopefully meeting a ton of characters. Indulging in way too many snacks. It’s hard to pick just one thing… but if I had to choose, my heart belongs to everything Haunted Mansion-related. The ride itself, the lighting and eerie theming, Madame Carlotta, the Hitchhiking Ghosts—every ghostly detail makes me giddy. I’m especially hoping for a better view of the Headless Horseman this year.
For Aiden, it’s all about the trick-or-treating—he lights up at every candy stop. And Josh? Let’s just say he’s got his eye on the food. 😅
We’re all excited for different reasons, and that’s part of what makes it so special.
😅 What Could Go Wrong (and We’re Okay With It)
The biggest wildcard? Rain. And not just a quick 30-minute downpour—we’re talking full-on storms that can delay or even cancel parts of the party altogether. That’s the kind of thing that makes all the planning feel pointless… but hey, we’ll still be at Disney. We’ll figure it out. Hopefully it won’t come to that.
Other things we’re prepared for:
- The heat and humidity (hello, September in Florida)
- Crowds, especially in tight spaces
- Possibly needing a backup costume if mine gets too hot or uncomfortable
The key is rolling with it. If things don’t go as planned, we’ll pivot, laugh, and make the best of it—because we’re still together, still in the magic, and that’s what matters.

Mission Mobility: Rent the Scooter
Our first Disney trip as a family was supposed to be magical. And in many ways, it was. But I’d be lying if I didn’t admit it was also frustrating, exhausting, and emotionally messy at times—especially because of something I tried to prevent: the scooter situation.

My husband is a retired Army Special Forces veteran. The kind of man who would carry 100 pounds of gear through heat, mud, and pain without complaint. That warrior mindset doesn’t just disappear after retirement—it sticks. And with it comes a whole lot of pride.
So when I suggested he rent a scooter for our trip to Disney World—because I knew how much walking was involved—he looked at me like I’d suggested he show up in a tutu.
“I’m fine,” he said.
“I can push through,” he said.
“I don’t need a damn scooter.”
Except he did.
😤 Pain in the Parks—And Not Just His
By the second day, the cracks were showing. He was in pain. I could see it in the way he walked, the way he tensed up, the shortness in his voice. And the pain made him grumpy. Really grumpy. Like full-on Grumpy from Snow White without the beard but with all the attitude kind of grumpy.
He snapped and huffed. He stood off to the side while our son and I tried to enjoy the rides. And that second night… I cried in the bathtub. Not because I was mad, but because I was heartbroken. I wanted this trip to be full of magic and memories—and instead I felt like I was dragging a miserable man through the Most Magical Place on Earth.
That’s when I snapped, too.
⚠️ The Ultimatum
On the morning of Day 3, I gave him a choice:
“You either rent a scooter, or I’m leaving you in the room while our son and I go enjoy the park.”
I meant it. I was done tiptoeing around his pain and pride and needed to salvage the trip—for all of us.
And I walked out the door. I sat down and enjoyed breakfast with my son and then we headed to catch the bus. That’s when my husband caught up to us. And we all headed to Hollywood Studios.
Once we got to the park he grumbled, but he rented the scooter.
And just like that… everything changed.

✨🛵 Magic on Wheels
With the scooter, the pain faded into the background. His mood lifted. He laughed again. He rode beside our son and actually enjoyed himself. That one decision—just renting the damn scooter—gave us the family trip we’d been dreaming of.
After that, he never looked back.
He now has his own personal scooter. It’s fully decked out with military branch stickers, a digital faceplate on the front, and—yes—a couple of pairs of Mickey ears. Oh, and it has a name now: Bad Duck. 😅
He rides that thing with pride. It’s not just a mobility device anymore—it’s a whole character, a companion, a statement.
Bad Duck is loud, proud, and unapologetically ours. It’s become a symbol of embracing the life we have, not the one we wish we still lived in.

🧠💔 The Real Battle? Letting Go of the Old Rules
For many veterans, disability is complicated. There’s pride in enduring. There’s shame in asking for help. But Disney doesn’t care how tough you used to be. Disney will chew up your back, knees, and feet and spit them out before noon.
This wasn’t about weakness. It was about wisdom. And in the end, it was about LOVE.
Because choosing to ride that scooter meant choosing to be present with his family. It meant putting connection ahead of pride. And that is nothing short of heroic.

💬 To the Stubborn Warrior in Your Life
If you’re reading this and thinking about someone you love who “doesn’t need a scooter”—this post is for you.
If you’re that person yourself, I say this with all the love in the world:
Rent. The. Scooter.
You don’t have anything to prove.
But you’ve got a whole lot to enjoy.
✨ TL;DR:
- My retired Special Forces husband refused a scooter at Disney.
- He was in pain and super grumpy. I cried in the tub.
- I gave him an ultimatum: scooter or stay in the room.
- He chose the scooter—and the whole trip got better.
- Now he has his own, covered in military pride and Mickey ears.
- Moral of the story: Rent the damn scooter. Don’t let pride ruin your family’s fun.
